Narrative
SOLON, IA – A 77-year-old woman died Sunday, and four others sustained injuries in a multi-vehicle crash along the highway in northeast Johnson County.
The accident happened at 5:36 p.m. on Highway 1 at 140th Street Northeast, which is on the northern outskirts of Solon and just west of Melinda Reif Fen & Prairie.
Police say a westbound Jeep Cherokee failed to heed a stop sign and struck at northbound vehicle hauling a camper as well as a southbound vehicle in the intersection. A fourth vehicle was then struck by wreckage from the accident.
The driver of the southbound vehicle, identified as Dr. Usha Mallik, Ph.D., died at the scene.
Medics airlifted the driver of the Jeep to the hospital. Three other people involved in the crash also required hospitalization.
A full investigation is underway.
